In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis, Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian startup communities acted immediately and in the middle of March organized online hackathons to fight back the battle. Now, many countries like France, Norway, Italy, Poland, Finland, Afghanistan, Brazil, Hungary, Belgium, Ukraine, Canada, Germany, Australia, Madagascar, United Kingdom and more are organizing an online hackathon as well to find and integrate the possible solutions.

While the crisis is far from over, everyone is already living in a world where the future is now and the battle is inevitable. Acknowledging the situation, Accelerate Estonia, Garage48 and Latvian creative force is co-creating the online hackathon The Global Hack on April 9-12. Participants from all over the world are welcome to join the biggest hackathon that has ever been held. Everyone is in a very unique position as the whole world is fighting the same problem all at once and together. The force behind the hackathon invites us to move fast and share ideas to overcome a massive social and economical disruption. Everyone interested is welcome to join the Slack channel, submit their ideas and find team members to implement the project. Ideas can be registered until April 8.

The global virtual hackathon will be divided into different tracks and the Latvian creative force which organized the one of the previously mentioned hackathons in Latvia HackForce will create the economy track supported by Swedbank. The organizers and the society itself has recognized the economy as one of the essential industries that are facing the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis.

The organizers of The Global Hack are happy to announce that Steve Jurvetson has joined the hackathon's economy track as an inspirational lead. Currently, Steve is an active investor, as well as the member of the Tesla and SpaceX board. “I'm very excited about this project that we will take on. How do you get to these new powerful ideas and hack the future? I think that there is a very important framework and that is that every idea is a combination of prior ideas. Almost never does a new powerful idea come out of nowhere without a precedent.”

The current economic situation is a very important indicator, as it reflects the well-being and security of the world, society, and companies in times of crisis. Due to the pandemic, people are currently losing their jobs, and companies are being forced to close down, which affects not only the individuals but also the country and various social groups in general. Based on experience, such situations can have a serious impact on society and global processes for several years to come. The goal of the hackathon's economy track is to highlight these problems and offer solutions that will significantly alleviate the situation now and in the future.

The economy track of the online hackathon The Global Hack is supported by Swedbank which at the end of the hackathon will also reward the most promising idea with 5000 euros for the development of the project.

“Currently, the whole world is struggling with the consequences of the coronavirus, which has undoubtedly left and will continue to have a significant impact on the local and global economy. Swedbank believes that this initiative is a great initiative to invite creative and innovative minds that can offer us successful and quick-to-integrate ideas that are useful from today and we will gladly support the authors of the most successful project,” says Reinis Rubenis, the Chairman of Swedbank Latvia.

The hackathon The Global Hack is co-organized by the Latvian creative force and volunteers.
